Professor
Prof. Dr. Md. Johirul Islam is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET), Bangladesh, specializing in biomedical signal processing, electromyography (EMG), myoelectric pattern recognition, and embedded biomedical systems. His research focuses on developing robust, reliable, and affordable technologies for EMG-based human–machine interfacing, particularly for upper-limb prosthetic control. His expertise encompasses EMG feature engineering, muscle-force estimation, electrode-position-invariant gesture recognition, biosignal acquisition, and real-time embedded system development. Through interdisciplinary research and innovation, he aims to translate advances in biomedical signal processing into practical assistive technologies that improve the quality of life of people with disabilities.
With more than a decade of university teaching and research experience, Dr. Islam has progressed through academic positions as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor before becoming a Professor at RUET in May 2025. His academic activities integrate teaching, research supervision, and the development of innovative biomedical technologies.
Dr. Islam has led and contributed to several research projects funded by RUET, focusing on contactless EMG signal acquisition, electrode-position optimization, electrode-shift-invariant hand-gesture recognition, and muscle-stiffness estimation for improved myoelectric control. A major focus of his current research is the development of an affordable myoelectric prosthetic hand for low-income amputees in Bangladesh. Through an ongoing project supported by the Improving Computer and Software Engineering Tertiary Education Project (ICSETEP), under the Ministry of Education, Bangladesh, he is working toward assistive technology that enables users to perform essential daily activities. His long-term research vision is to advance robust EMG feature engineering, force-aware myoelectric control, and accessible biomedical systems. By combining scientific innovation with practical engineering, Prof. Dr. Md. Johirul Islam seeks to contribute to affordable rehabilitation technologies and improve access to assistive devices in Bangladesh and beyond.
